How to Sell Metal Roofing in 2026
Over the last 40 years, I have seen many changes in how the industry sells quality residential metal roofing. We have an opportunity to elevate how we sell in today’s market.
Other than replacement windows, almost no other premium home improvement or home replacement product is sold with the mentality of “show up, measure, present, offer a contract, cross your fingers, and leave”. That method invites intense price scrutiny and competition, creating a race to the bottom. It’s no longer in the contractor’s best interest, and it definitely isn’t how today’s homeowners want to make such a major decision.
For many years, I have closely watched the “design-build” methods used by industry leaders when selling kitchens, baths, room enclosures, exterior cladding, major remodels, and related products. With the spread of metal roofing and the size of many homeowners’ projects, the time is right to start using these methods.
For the contractor, benefits include:
- Far fewer competitors. In fact, done well, no one else will even be bidding on the project.
- A comfortable process that is easily taught to any sales consultant and easily followed by managers.
- The opportunity to fully explore and immerse yourself in the world of high-quality residential metal roofing, bringing your customers the best possible options.
- Increased referrals because your sales process disarms prospects, leaving them feeling comfortable and in control.
- The added opportunity to enter into other trades and gain a customer for life.
With this process, the homeowners’ needs and wants are quickly identified and defined. You help them define their budget expectations early. And the solution to their roofing problem is designed with them, not just presented to them. When done properly, something powerful happens. The homeowner stops shopping around and starts committing.
