Lessons from 1 Year of Podcasting

Issue #205 | September 7, 2022 | Ethan Young

It’s been a year since I wrote to you about the start of our podcast, Construction Disruption. As of that article, we had five episodes recorded; now we’ve published nearly fifty. We’ve switched recording platforms, dealt with technical issues, discussed a wide variety of subjects, and come a long way since then.

First, we learned that it takes a lot of effort to get a podcast up and running, especially on the recording and editing side, but also in finding the right guests for our audience. But, despite the challenges, it’s been a rewarding experience to bring valuable content to our listeners.

Perhaps the biggest unforeseen benefit of the podcast has been the people. Meeting with, networking, and sharing knowledge has been fantastic. As the behind-the-scenes guy, I started out listening in to episodes. Later, I had the chance to co-host a few episodes, giving me a different side of the podcast.

Next, our list of topics has dramatically expanded too. We’ve covered personal stories, industry outlooks, upcoming technologies, sales and marketing lessons, architecture, artificial intelligence, 3-D printed homes, and more. As we’ve branched out to cover all these, we’ve met many great people along the way.

Our breadth of topics has been a blessing and a curse. Although developing an audience is a crucial part of the podcast, what’s the point without listeners? We’ve found that refining our focus allows us to present a clearer identity. That way, listeners know what to expect when they tune into Construction Disruption.

As for our early expectations, I think we’ve exceeded them. We promised weekly releases and have mostly kept up with that promise. In July, we even made it on the Chartable Top 200 in the US Technology category.

As I said in the first article, the podcast has been a great tool for awareness. Several people have mentioned it to us, and we’ve seen its reach in our sphere of influence.

Selfishly, producing and creating a podcast has also been a good exercise for our team. We’ve developed skills, built an extensive network of professionals, and learned how to produce and publish a podcast.

For me, the podcast has been a source of evergreen content too. I’ve been able to pull lessons and topics from it for these reports. It has brought several things to my attention that I’ve been glad to pass on to this audience, like Jeff Chatterton’s crisis management solutions, Tony Trapp’s perspective on trade schools, or Evan Troxel’s innovative idea to connect architects and suppliers

For the rest of the team, we recently recorded an episode of musings on this first year of podcasting. So stay tuned to construction-disruption.comApple Podcasts, or your platform of choice.

Thanks for your readership and for listening to our podcast this year. We will continue to share perspectives from talented people across industries so you can keep up with the future of construction.
