AI Writing: pipe dream or perfectly usable?

Issue #227 | August 9, 2023 | Ethan Young

Most, if not all, of our readers are familiar with the concept of AI and generating text from services like Chat GPT. Maybe you’ve considered enlisting AI to write your blog posts, social media captions, or even emails. (Quick disclaimer, every issue of the Executive Report until now has been straight from the brain of a writer, not the best attempt from AI.)

But I’ve been curious on how effective AI writing can be. Will it take my job? Or is it all just a question of time?

So, I conducted a simple test with the generative AI of Grammarly, a popular spellcheck and typing assistant that reviews grammar and more. For full transparency, I’ve been using Grammarly Pro as a second set of eyes on my writing for a few years now, mainly to catch mistakes and inconsistencies. They recently debuted their own AI and I gave it a simple prompt: write an article about the growing popularity of metal roofing. Here’s the result:

Metal roofing has become popular for homeowners looking for a durable and long-lasting roofing solution. While metal roofing may have been primarily used for commercial buildings in the past, it is also a viable option for residential homes.

One of the main benefits of metal roofing is its durability. Unlike traditional roofing materials such as asphalt shingles, metal roofing is designed to last for decades. Metal roofing is also resistant to weather-related damage such as hail and wind, making it an ideal choice for homes in areas prone to severe weather.

Metal roofing also offers energy efficiency benefits. The reflective surface of metal roofing helps to reflect heat and keep your home cooler in the summer, reducing energy bills.

In addition, metal roofing is environmentally friendly. Many metal roofing materials are made from recycled materials, and when it is time to replace your metal roof, it can be recycled again.

While metal roofing may have a higher upfront cost than traditional roofing materials, it is a worthwhile investment in the long run. The durability and longevity of metal roofing mean that it will require less maintenance and will not need to be replaced as often as traditional roofing materials.

Metal roofing is an excellent choice for homeowners looking for a durable, long-lasting, and energy-efficient roofing solution. With its many benefits, it is no wonder that metal roofing has become such a popular choice for residential homes.

This was the first attempt, and it’s pretty accurate in its assessment. While not entirely convincing or perfect, it offers a readable, nearly instant text. You could definitely publish this as a blog post on your website. It hits several key points, answers a common objection, and wraps up things nicely.

So, what do you think? For me, I may be relegated to the role of editor soon enough, but for all those in need of copy for websites, marketing, and whatever else, AI may be your new best friend. Just give it a good once-over before publishing anything.
